YOMASTE BALI: Yoga, Travel, Culture

SUMMARY:

Grab your yoga mat and join us in beautiful Bali this May! In the company of new yogi friends, you will practice yoga, pranayam and learn new kriyas, guided by experts (no prior yoga experience necessary as classes are designed for all levels) everyday.

You’ll also trek up Mount Batur (an active volcano), water sports along Bali’s idyllic coast, and visits to the country’s most spiritual temples. Plus, there’s always time to take a relaxing swim, shop in the local markets, and eat lots of Bali food in store.

ITINERARY:

DAY 1 Welcome to Bali!

Our representative will be at the Ngurah Rai International Airport in Denpasar to welcome you with a fresh towel and beautiful flowers; a fitting introduction to this beautiful, friendly island. You will be chauffeured to the hotel so you can check in (please note that the check-in time is 2:00 PM), take in the beautiful view from your room, and settle in. In the evening, meet, greet and mingle with your fellow yogis at an introductory yoga session.

DAY 2

This morning, fuel up on breakfast and then pull on your sneakers because we’re going hiking up a volcano (yes, you read that right)!

After breakfast, we will drive to Kintamani, a highland area in the north of East Bali, passing old men drinking tea at roadside stalls and children on their way to school. Then, we will make our way to Mount Batur, an active 1,717m volcano (don’t worry, the last eruption occurred in 1994 and ever since, it has entered a quiet period) to start our trek! This trek will take about 3 hours, and is a moderate climb.

The view of the surrounding forests, tiny villages, blue waters of Lake Batur and patches of onion, cabbage and papaya groves get increasingly more beautiful, the higher you climb. We’ll stop en route to enjoy a boxed lunch.

After you make your way back down the volcano, head back to your hotel to unwind and for a good night’s rest.

DAY 3

Get ready for a session practicing kriyas. Your teachers will lead you through a series of exercises that help to detoxify and purify specific areas of your body, including the eyes, nostrils, intestines and stomach.

After lunch, you are free to spend the evening on your own, or you can visit the Goa Gajah Temple aka the Elephant Cave Temple (optional tour – on direct payment). This intricate rock-cut cave is filled with stupas and statues, a central meditational cave, bathing pools and fountains. This has been a holy ground for both Buddhist and Hindu practitioners, for thousands of years.

Everyone will meet up at the hotel at night for dinner.

DAY 4

Your morning starts with a yoga session that will relax, refresh and recharge you for the day (the session is suitable for all levels of practitioners).

Then: we’ll head to Tanjung Benoa, a fishing village on the idyllic south-east coast of Bali. Here, we’ll board a glass-bottomed boat and set off across the warm Balinese sea to Turtle Island. Peering downwards, you’ll be able to see schools of fish – yellow-faced angelfish, Finding Nemo clownfish, barracuda and more – as they swim above the colourful coral gardens.

Next up: you’ll go bananas (pun intended) for this exhilarating, high-speed banana boat ride! Once you climb aboard, a jet ski kicks into high gear, pulling your inflatable boat through the turquoise waters. Hold on tight!

We’ll head back after you’ve had lunch (on your own). Recommended: try nasi campur (which is a bit like a thali, having rice, and smaller dishes such as stir-fried eggplant or green beans, curried meats and fried eggs,  as well as bubur sumsum (black rice pudding).

In the evening: a yoga session to bring balance to your mind and body followed by dinner.

DAY 5

Greet the day with yoga, pranayam followed by breakfast

Afterwards, head out to explore Denpasar City along with a local guide. The route will take in the city’s iconic spots as well as local highlights. We will also stop by a market where you’ll find traditional Balinese snack foods, dance costumes, flowers, fresh fish, fruits and spices from all corners of the island.

Then: we’ll visit Taman Ayun, one of the most famous temples in Bali. ‘Taman Ayun’ means ‘beautiful garden’ and it certainly lives up to its name. Surrounded by a small lily-filled moat, this temple looks as though it’s on an island. It is filled with a series of shrines made of carved wood and detailed stonework which are dedicated to various deities and spirits, green courtyards and terraces of flowers.

We’ll end our tour at the small but majestic Tanah Lot Temple, perched on rocky outcrop and battered by huge waves, it is a spectacular sight. At low tide, you may be able to see the caves below the temple where sea snakes (believed to be the guardians of the temple) lie.

After lunch at a local restaurant (on your own), we’ll head back to the hotel.

In the evening: a relaxing yoga session followed by dinner.

DAY 6:

After breakfast at the hotel, prepare to check out of the hotel to head to the airport, making a mental note to return as soon as you can. Have a safe flight home!
