NIMHANS to research on Buddhist meditation.
Doctors from the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS), who have been working on the effects of yoga and meditation on the brain for over three decades, are set to focus on the Buddhist traditions of meditation so as to integrate scientific understanding of mind with traditional contemplative practices. The yoga team from the premier institute will explore the benefits of yoga beyond the structural changes responsible for calming emotions, better memory and lower stress, to focus on “mindfulness meditation”, and will be working under the guidance of the Dalai Lama to better understand Buddhist spiritual philosophy. The Advanced Centre for Yoga in NIMHANS has been using yoga and it applications to help mind-related conditions (psychiatric disorders like depression and schizophrenia) and neurological disorders such as epilepsy. East Cleveland judge to teach yoga to criminal offenders.
Extending his judiciary duties beyond the courtroom, an East Cleveland judge, William L Dawson, is holding a unique yoga and meditation session for criminal offenders at the Municipal Court house in the city. “My mission is to save lives and I believe that the practice of yoga can help in that effort,” says Judge Dawson, who aims to end violence and change the growing negative interaction with the police through meditation, mindfulness and movement techniques, to positively change criminal behavior. The beefcake brigade of Insta-yogis!
INSTAGRAM, long a source for fitness inspiration, has lately been giving more visibility to a group of buff guys who seem to be taking the world of Instagram yoga by storm. Their preferred fitness style is a hybrid of yoga, acrobatics and calisthenics. This often shirtless buff brigade of macho men, with their rippling muscles and tattoo covered bodies , often perform Superhuman variations of planks performed with legs levitating off the ground and do elaborate lifts and holds, oozing machismo in every shutter-frame. #progressivecalisthenics , #barstarzz , @ModernTarzan are some of the more well known among this growing class of insta-yogis.
“Ultimately, the message we’re promoting is to take good care of your body, exercise, and don’t make excuses that you don’t have any equipment.” Says Al Kavadlo, a New York based trainer and founder of Progressive Calisthenics, who also leads informal groups, training them in his unique style.
