The Modi government’s penchant for promoting all things yoga is translating into research funding. The Department of Science and Technology has launched a new research programme called SATYAM (Science and Technology of Yoga and Meditation),  which allows scientists studying neurophysiological, neurochemical and cerebral blood flow changes in  processes related to yoga.   The programme intends to fund and promote scientific research so as to answer some of the most intriguing clinical questions about yoga – how does yoga affect cognition in patients with depression, what neuro-chemical alterations can the practice of yoga cause, how yoga affects cognition in healthy seniors, and how it might affect dementia. Sanskrit summer camp attracts 60 intellectuals in China.

As India’s ancient intellectual and cultural heritage gains popularity outside of the Indian subcontinent, it seems to be capturing the fascinations of a whole new generation of Chinese population.  A group of 60 Chinese intellectuals have enrolled at a Buddhist Institute for a free summer camp to study Sanskrit to understand the religious and yoga texts better.  Sanskrit gained prominence in China with the advent of Buddhism, as many Chinese monks travelling to India over centuries and brought back their knowledge of ancient Indian scriptures and medicine, most of which were written in Sanskrit. The renewed interest in he Indian language and scriptures is seen as a cultural revolution as professionals from various fields have enrolled in the course offered at the Hangzhou Buddhism Institute in eastern China.
