20 Minutes of Yoga daily, improves brain function
10 years ago, as an advertising copywriter I went in to my first yoga class hoping to do yoga to improve my focus and memory. Today, that decision has been proven right scientifically. (As if I didn’t know it anyway!)
Yogis in India have been practicing since time immemorial; and everyone from those yogis to even the least interested yoga students have always known that even a short daily practice has far reaching benefits for the mind. Yes, even those who do yoga ONLY to lose weight or gain flexibility, acknowledge that the yoga helps them focus and remain calm.
Researchers from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign asked 30 subjects to take tests of working memory and inhibitory control, two measures of brain function associated with the ability to focus, retain, and use new information.
Participants who took a single, 20-minute yoga session were significantly faster and more accurate on their tests than subjects who walked or jogged on a treadmill for 20 minutes!
This bodes well for the global yoga movement that’s now becoming a torrent. Millions worldwide are benefiting from Yoga and as more scientific research and information comes along; it will help to shatter myths regarding the cultural stereotyping of yoga. Yoga will in fact prove to be the culture of tomorrow – simply because its benefits will be so vast that it would become common sense to incorporate it into daily life!
