Know your asana: Padma Mayurasana

Like most other arm balances, Padma Mayurasana appears to require exceptional strength. What is actually needed, though, is patient, progressive work to develop a more intimate relationship with gravity. This arm balance is so much more!!

What is so special about Padma Mayurasana?

The ancient texts say that, a person who practices Padma mayurasana everyday, for 3 minutes or more, can even digest poison. This peacock variation helps in toning and strengthening the deep belly muscles. And gives us a strong digestion and metabolism.


The Manipura chakra is activated in this asana. Closely connected to the digestive system, especially the gastric and hypogastric plexi. Its main function is to help transform matter into energy to fuel your body. Thus, governing the metabolism.

Solar-plexus is responsible forthe expression of will, personal power and mental abilities.

  • Tones the abdomen
  • Increased hip flexibility
  • Strengthens the back, torso and legs
  • Improves the function of digestive system and makes abdominal muscles stronger.

Keep the elbows close to the navel. As the navel is the body center gives us equilibrium.


  • Avoid incase of weak wrists, shoulders or arms.
  • If you feel ill, while trying the pose. Get out of it.
  • If you cannot sit in Padmasana, try Mayurasana.

Padma mayurasana is intense. But change will unfold, if you consistently touch your discomfort, as softly as you can.
