Know Your Asana: Mayurasana

Mayurasana or the peacock pose ignites the fire in the stomach. Ancient texts say that, anyone who practices Mayurasana for 3 minutes everyday can digest poison too! Thus, helping the body digestion and metabolism.

What is so special about Mayurasana ?

Mayurasana  is a majestic and often imposing posture. That combines core strength and wrist flexibility for this arm balance pose. Besides, the benefits have a rippling effect through the yoga practice and fitness level.


The Manipura chakra is affected.  And as the seat of digestive fire, this Chakra regulates the function of the Pancreas and digestive organs. The solar plexus contains many precious jewels. Such as confidence, knowledge, wisdom and the ability to make correct decisions.

Benefits of Mayurasana

  1. Tones the abdominal region- Regular practice ensure that the abdominal fat is reduced.
  2. Strengthens the arms, shoulders and wrist! It’s a great arm balance posture.
  3. Removes toxins and detoxifies your body. As all the abdominal organs are stimulated.
  4. Strengthens and tones your reproductive system.
  5. It induces the pancreas and helps in preventing diabetes.
  6. Reduces anxiety and stress and give calmness to the mind.
  7. Increases your focusing power of the mind.


Avoid in case of, weak wrists, wrist injury, slip disc, neck injury.


  • Use your elbows to support the navel.
  • Engage the lower back to lift the lower body.

This is a challenging posture. In a lot of texts, this asana is not recommended for the female body. Especially, when have your mensuration cycle or are palnning to conceive. Take care, when preparing for this asana.
