Pitta Dosha

Pitta combines the elements of fire and water and it means “that which cooks”. It is the energy that controls the body’s metabolic systems, including digestion, absorption, nutrition, and body temperature. The qualities of Pitta are oily, sharp, hot, light, moving, liquid, and acidic. Thereby, Pitta individuals  display physical and mental characteristics that reflect these qualities in both a balanced and imbalanced state.

Main locations of Pitta in the body

Small intestine, stomach, liver, spleen, pancreas, blood, eyes, and sweat.

Physiological functions of Pitta

Provides the body with heat and energy through the breakdown of complex food molecules. It governs all processes related to conversion and transformation throughout the mind and body.

Psychological functions of Pitta

Pitta governs joy, courage, willpower, anger, jealousy, and mental perception. It also provides the radiant light of the intellect.

Characteristics of Pitta

The body structure of Pitta person is medium sized built, moderate muscle tone. It needs to be made sure that inner fire in our body should be balanced or else it it results in overheat. When Pitta is balanced, the person is joyful, courageous and  has sharp intellect.When the pitta is unruly, the joyous person becomes angry, filled with rage and always yelling, creating hell for people around him\her. Thus, Pitta imbalances commonly manifest in the body as infection, inflammation, rashes, ulcers, heartburn, and fever.

Diet & General health tips:

It’s important for Pittas to keep cool by avoiding overexposure to direct sunlight. Avoid alcohol, tobacco, fried and spicy food, overworking, and overheating. When aggravated, susceptible to feeling negative emotions like hostility, hatred, intolerance, and jealousy. Choose fresh vegetables and fruits that are watery and sweet, especially cherries, mangoes, cucumbers, water melon, and avocado. Thereby, have lots of salads with dark greens.


It is important to work the abdominal area, so twists like Ardhmatsyendrasana are quite balancing. All standing forward bends and heart opening poses, like, dhanurasana  and bhujangasana help to reduce pitta. Chandra Namaskar also has a cooling effect on pitta types.
