  Dear Yogis, we’re going to collate the most important news on Yoga every day and present it to you for easy reading. Here’s everything that we find newsworthy in yoga today; and also a little bit of inspirational content with an occasional Wacky story thrown in for good measure (there’s plenty of those in the modern yoga world!!)   Enthusiasts throng Marine Drive for Yoga by the Bay. Mumbai residents doing Yoga by the Bay, at Marine DRive. Mumbai residents, yoga mats in hand, thronged the Marine Drive promenade for the newly-launched Yoga by the Bay. A joint initiative of BJP politician Shaina NC’s NGO I Love Mumbai and  The Times of India, the event was launched after the massive success of the International Yoga Day in June. It is held on the last Sunday of every month and is usually has a dedicated theme, that the NGO contributes towards every month. The event is becoming hugely popular, with peope turning up in large numbers, yoga enthusiasts calling it a “dream come true to do yoga in such a scenic location while enjoying the sea breeze.” Read more here>> […]

Here’s everything that we find newsworthy in yoga today; and also a little bit of inspirational content with an occasional Wacky story thrown in for good measure (there’s plenty of those in the modern yoga world!!)   The scientist baba: Market-savvy yoga guru Ramdev and his DRDO deal Yoga guru Ramdev signed deal with DRDO to market Ayurvedic products produced by the military. Yoga guru Ramdev’s pharma company Patanjali Ayurveda recently signed up with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) to manufacture and market herbal supplements and food products developed by the military. Given the success and popularity of the pharma giant, the deal is a steal for the DRDO rather than the other way round. According to an Economic Times report, Patanjali Ayurveda manufactures and sells everything from hand wash to capsules to cure semen deficiency, cashing Rs 1,200 crore in revenues in the previous fiscal, and has 15,000 exclusive showrooms across the country. Modi performing asana with fellow citizens on International Yoga Day, in New Delhi. A US-based organisation of Hindu students, has decided to honour Prime Minister Narendra Modi with the Light o f Yoga award for his contribution to raise awareness about the ancient Indian practice across the world.  The Global Dharma Conference, to be held in New Jersey between Sept 11-13, would  see PM Modi sharing this honour with spiritual gurus Sri Sri Ravi Shankar and Swami Dayananda Saraswati along with H R Nagendra, chairman of Committee of Yoga Experts for International Yoga Day. New yoga funding by the Department of Science and Technology will help further answer questions on whether, how and why yoga works and its limits. The Modi government’s penchant for promoting all things yoga is translating into research funding. The Department of Science and Technology has launched a new research programme called SATYAM (Science and Technology of Yoga and Meditation),  which allows scientists studying neurophysiological, neurochemical and cerebral blood flow changes in  processes related to yoga.   The programme intends to fund and promote scientific research so as to answer some of the most intriguing clinical questions about yoga – how does yoga affect cognition in patients with depression, what neuro-chemical alterations can the practice of yoga cause, how yoga affects cognition in healthy seniors, and how it might affect dementia.
