Yoga for a Great Cause!

Want to get fit, challenge yourself, inspire change and use yoga to sponsor a child through school? Head to Cubbon park on Sunday, the 26th for our Karma Yogathon.  First of all, thankyou dear yogis for coming out in hordes and supporting #Karma Yogathon 2016. It is that time of the year again and we have loftier goals this time around. We are hopeful about raising enough money to put 10 kids through a year of school at Vidya.   Vidya foundation : Vidya is an amazing non-profit NGO that specialises in the education, empowerment and transformation of lesser-privileged children and women through programs that include award winning schools, computer training, micro finance and social entrepreneurship. Founded in 1985, Vidya now offers programs in some of the poorest neighbourhoods of Delhi, Haryana, Mumbai and Bangalore creating better futures for children.    Total Yoga : Here at Total yoga, we have always been about being a socially conscious yet fun-loving band of yogis who believe in the importance of community. Being good at Yoga for us translates to being good at life and about inspiring people to take yoga from beyond the mat and into the world. Join us for a morning of 108 surya namaskars as a way to bond with the yoga community and help a great cause. Today, I just wanted to give my Teachers’ a Big Hug !

Monday morning … No longer is there trepidation with saluting the sun with 108 – but have I learnt to do and go beyond to that place where we meet the glory of life? In this space of glory, an overwhelming feeling of compassion resides … is this love? I see it in others, I know when I am there…. Life is beautiful... In this time, today arms dangled by my sides, itching to move... there was no thought, it was only my heart ... I just wanted to hug everyone, particularly my teachers …  I stalled, I didn’t, a thought came in ...  did time stop? Was I the only one feeling this? I leave class with a formal goodbye, it didn’t feel right, as soon as I’m in the car I want to rush back, but I didn’t … Now, for my long drive home … music blaring, high on life/love… this energy nurtured from my yoga practice, inside so strong… need those running shoes ... I’m stuck in the car… everything is beautiful… Then, again time stopped, I’m mesmerized by a kind face, her wrinkled skin like a walnut shell, eyes wide open, a witness to depths of life beyond what I know. She is perfectly dressed in a yellow sari, hair oiled, neat, clean, proud… I notice a loaf of bread in her hand, she stalls for her rupees...she leaves without it ... empty …I want to go to her …but I didn’t, time moves me on… What I know ...Life is about taking a risk, we all fear rejection or think we may make a fool of ourselves... but if we can stay in that present moment and be [...]

LOVE of Sharing and Caring – Karma Yoga Way!

There are different ways of explaining Karma Yoga or community service. For instance different ways of doing it, say monetary, spending time and many others. However what stood out, from my own experience and you all will agree as well is - Karma Yoga is not just about spending sometime and doing a activity, but doing it because you want to do it and with complete happiness. If you can joyfully involve yourself in any activity, that is KARMAYOGA. Life only comes around once, so do whatever makes you happy, and be with whoever makes you SMILE!- Ashley Bryant. On Valentines day spending time with your loved one, family or friends - That in itself is karma Yoga- you are doing it with 100% love and happiness, without any expectation. Thanks to all of you around the globe for the tremendous support for the Karma Yogathon for Vidya!! It's heartening to see how people from across the globe show their support and INVOLVEMENT! On a lighter note, after 108 Suryanamaskars............pretty sure we were involved! We would love to hear your experience of Karma Yoga with us!!

ROLE OF YOGA IN WEIGHT LOSS by Total Yogi Kuldeep Singh Bist

Weight Gain and Obesity is the most common problem and is also the most frustrating and difficult to manage. We gain weight when we eat more calories (energy in the food) than we burn or burn fewer calories than we eat. Our body has a constant demand of energy and uses calories from the food to keep functioning. Carbohydrates, proteins and fats are the types of nutrients that contain calories and the main energy source of our body. Regardless of where they come from, the calories we eat are either converted to physical energy or stored within our body as fat. These stored calories will remain in our body as fat in adipose tissue unless we use them up either by reducing calorie intake so that our body draw on reserves for energy or by increasing physical activity so that we burn more calories or both. At rest we need energy for breathing, circulating blood, adjusting hormones levels and growing and repairing cells. The number of calories our body uses to carry out these basic functions is known as basal metabolic rate or we might call metabolism. In addition to basic metabolic rate two other factors food processing and physical activities determine how many calories our body burns each day. We don’t have control over our basal metabolic rate but we can control how many calories we burn through the physical activity. The more active we are, the more calories we burn. The amount of calories average adult male needs depends on his size and activity level and various from 2000 to 3000 calories per day. Unfortunately weight loss is complicated. It’s likely a combination of genetic makeup, hormonal controls, metabolic efficiency, diet composition, [...]

Benefits of Yoga – Benefit number two!

I’m back with another benefit today! This one is very popular. Here’s benefit number two: YOGA FOR WEIGHT LOSS Losing weight is a struggle for many. Maintaining the body after weight loss is even harder. You may go on crazy diets; cut down on desserts, junk food, eat only salads and drink fresh juice all day and still see minimal change. According to a famous news article in the daily mail, the people in UK alone spent 1.8billion pounds on diet foods in 2013!! Many young women fall prey to eating disorders like anorexia, bulimia etc. Is it even worth it? Abusing our body for a size zero? Personally I think it’s nonsense. I’m slim myself but this is not because of crazy diets. I’ve been asked many times ‘’What’s your secret?’’ I simply say I eat whatever I want and I workout accordingly. I follow no diet and I don’t intend to either. Yoga helps you lose weight and also strengthen your body simultaneously. Being slim alone is not enough, you must be fit too! The most popular yoga series you can follow to lose weight would be the Surya namaskaar also known as the Sun salutation. Surya namaskaar is a set of asana that’s performed in succession. It’s an effective weight loss tool and a great warm up exercise for other physical activities as well. If you are a beginner you can start with eleven rounds of Surya namaskaar daily and slowly increase the numbers. For the intermediate level you can set your timer for 5 minutes and practice Surya namaskaar with no break till your timer goes off! For a more advanced level, set your timer for 10 minutes and do as [...]
