Look into Life and Teaching of B.K.S Iyengar on World Yoga day

International Day of Yoga also referred to as World Yoga day is celebrated annually on 21st June, since Prime Minister Modi initiated this day on 2015. On account of World Yoga day, lets take a look at some significant figures in the field of Yoga  like B.K.S Iyengar, Baba Ramdev & Pattabhi Jois. I will be speaking about B.K.S Iyengar, who created and propagated one of the most famous style of Yoga, Iyengar Yoga. Lets have a look at his life, teachings, vision and his work in Yoga. B.K.S Iyengar  (Bellur Krishnamachar Sundararaja), dearly called Guruji by Iyengar yoga practitioners was born on December 14, 1918 in Karnataka. His initial few years weren't amongst his fittest as he suffered from many ailments including malaria, typhoid and tuberculosis. His father sent him to Mysore to learn Yoga from T.Krishnamacharya, also known as father of modern Yoga. T.Krishnamacharya was teaching at Parakala Math at that time, with support from King of Mysore. We all know that T.Krishmacharya trained most famous personalities in yoga; Pattabhi Jois, Indira Devi, Desikachar, A.G Mohan to name a few.      Krishnamacharya sent Iyengar to Pune to teach Yoga at age of 18 years after two years of training with him! It is said that Iyengar couldn't complete his Yoga training with his teacher & most of his teachings are from his own practice! I myself trained under one of his students in my first few years of Yoga.  He went through lot of struggle in his initial days of teaching at Deccan Gymkhana. Yoga on ‘Happy Streets’: An Outdoor Fitness Initiative!

Yogis, Come Join us for Yoga sessions on 'Happy Streets' in Pune every Sunday! Total Yoga has always been socially active organizing events like Yoga-for-Runners, Yogi Treks, Retreats, Cycle Day and Karma Yoga CSR initiatives. We could not more happier, as we will be associated with “Happy Streets”. What is Happy Streets? An article is Times says “Though residents in Aundh have a few open spaces to indulge in recreational activities, they are never enough for the 2.5 lakh citizens in Aundh ward, or even those living in other parts of the city. With Happy Streets set to create that ideal open space on Aundh's ITI Road and DP Road on Sundays, residents are already excited with the possibility and say there is plenty for them to look forward to.” Now a days, with the mall culture and growing traffic, there is lack of space for outdoor recreational activities. Gone are days when we would see bunch of kids playing in open playground. This initiative is an awesome opportunity for kids as well as adults to engage in outdoor activities. Wouldn't it be fantastic, if on weekends we take family to such events instead of spending time in mall. What could be a better way to introduce kids to fitness! I really hope these kind of activities gets whole lot of support and it spreads to other parts of Pune as well. It is really good to see Puneites slowly getting enthusiastic in fitness activities. Yoga for Kids

 Today’s generation of kids is very smart and knowledgeable. World is getting smarter, IQ scores have significantly gone up. Kids are more into technology than the adults. No wonder, you may see 7-year kid teaching an adult how to operate smartphone. Kids nowadays live a past paced lifestyle juggling between school, tuition, sports and activities. It may not seem but they are have to deal with stress of competition and finding balance between academic and non-academic subjects. Teaching yoga to children at a young age has tremendous health benefits. There are so many choices available to parents for activities; like dance, martial arts, gymnastics etc. What makes yoga distinct? Yoga is an ancient science, which promotes optimal physical and mental health. Its helps in overall well-being by building awareness, strength and flexibility in body as well as mind. Yoga for children is certainly one way to ensure that our kids grow up healthy and happy.
