“Om Mani Padme Hum”
(May the jewel of the lotus be within me)
The subtle sense of quiet and wonder one usually experiences after the first few sessions of “dhyaan” is more often than not, a very unique and personal experience for each one of us. Most practitioners would agree with me when I say that its beauty lies in its inexplicable nature. Yet,while the definitions may vary, the scientific community and spiritual philosophers alike, agree that meditation has innumerable benefits.
Yet, some of us are often skeptical of taking up this practice. Texts on yoga often advice on taking up meditative practices under the guidance of a guru (teacher). Yoga is a hormonal science which brings about profound physiological changes when the endocrine system works in tandem with all other body system. The idea being that every single cell in the body has to be in a state of perfect health – at its optimum functional capacity. Thus, the asanas and physical postures are a mere preparative exercise to eventually enable the mind to first reach to, and then expand beyond the constrains of body, emotion and conscionable reality.
Lately, yoga and meditation are a trending topic in the health circles, where everyone today is looking for quick fix solutions to all of their life’s problems. Meditation is powerful, yet mediation is easy. It can be practiced without any equipment or tools, at any point of time in the day, for any duration of time. And most importantly, it can be taken up by anyone, at any point in their life. So whether you start today or a week from now; whether you are looking for an experience or a solution; whether you sit on an expensive mat in a fancy studio in designer gear or under a tree in a far off land or at your desk in the office, just take up this practice. Start. And Keep up. Give it a minute, and a breath or two. Because all it takes is you!
